Miguel Vale de Almeida

Miguel Vale de Almeida is a Portuguese anthropologist. He is an LGBT activist and was a member of the Portuguese parliament (“Assembleia da República”) for the Socialist Party, having been involved in the approval of same-sex marriage and the gender identity law.

He is a full professor at ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, where he received his PhD. He is also the Director of the journal of anthropology Etnográfica. He has published several books, like An Earth-Colored Sea: Race, Culture and the Politics of Identity in the Post-Colonial Portuguese-Speaking World (2004) and The Hegemonic Male: Masculinity in a Portuguese Town (2004). He is also the e author of the science fiction book Euronovela, winner of the Editorial Caminho de Ficção Científica award in 1997.

Currently, he is also involved in Project Multiversity, as it centers around some of his research interests: mainly, issues of gender and sexuality, as well as race and post-colonialism.
